When it snows, there are several reasons why it becomes quiet:
- When snow accumulates on the ground, it absorbs sound. Snow has the highest sound-absorbing capacity in the air, so when it accumulates, sound is either not heard or heard very little. As a result, sounds such as car or human footsteps are reduced, making it quieter in densely populated areas such as cities or towns.
- As the temperature drops while it snows, cold air spreads and distorts the wavelength of sound. This interferes with the transmission of sound and reduces the quality of the sound heard, resulting in a decrease in sound when it snows.
- Since snow usually falls when the wind is weak, the sound caused by the wind also decreases, making it quiet.
Therefore, it is generally quieter during snowfall.
